To be honest I've just gotten sick of all the plain salsa you find at the grocery stores. I've even gotten so bored that this year I decided to start canning my own to start exploring what ingredients can bring out the flavor. In searching for these ingredients I discovered Mrs. Renfro which I think I've seen the name before but never tried. They graciously sent me over 4 jars of my choice to try - Black Bean Salsa, Garlic Salsa, Ghost Pepper Salsa, and their Barbeque Sauce. Mrs. Renfro's carries all of these salsas and several other varieties as well as relishes and jalepenos. Keep in mind I usually try to rate my hot sauce/salsas on a scale 1 to 10. 1 is very mild no spice, 5 being spicey, and 10 needs a medicine dropper and the bottle should not even be touched by the weak.
The very first day I received these I was so excited I had to try one! After reading the descriptions, I decided to start with Black Bean Salsa. Thankfully we had just run out of salsa in our house so I made myself a Cheese Crisp (basically a cheese quesadilla). I used the salsa to dip my slices into for a quick snack for lunch. This has great flavor and texture which I kind of expected since I love black beans. They suggest using this salsa for a homemade southwest pizza which I think could be an interesting recipe to try. If you ask me I give this a spice factor of 2 or 3 not too bad for most people.
Next we went with the milder salsa - The Garlic. I used this one for my daughter and husband since Kevin doesn't like anything remotely spicey and my daughter likes things a little hot. Now this salsa was amazing with lots of flavor and I actually used this as a bread dipping salsa for a little get together we had. This one in my opinion would also be great on a pizza. My only thing is it didn't taste much like a salsa to me so you'll find me adding jalepenos or additional hot sauce to this one! I would rate it a 1 spice factor at most.
Once I noticed Mrs. Renfros had a barbeque sauce I had to get it for Kevin. He is my barbeque guru! The first night we pulled this out we honestly used it with something as simple as chicken fingers. Everyone liked the smooth hickory flavor and we though it held true to its description and was very sweet! The whole family loved it so much the next night we used it to grill over chicken with a another family and we all gobbled the chicken up. I felt like it made it extra tender! This has a spice factor of 1 at most.
And last but not least comes the Ghost Pepper Salsa. This year is actually the first year I am growing ghost peppers in my garden so I was thrilled to see how this salsa was going to taste. This was fantastically HOT! It is very hard to find a hot salsa with a *good* flavor. Usually others mask the flavor of the meal or overpower it but not this one. I made myself a large taco salad. My nose was running within the first couple bites but I had a lasting flavor that didn't make me run for the garden hose! I would definitely recommend this above the other three if you are a fan of the HOT! I give this a spice factor of 6 or 7 (I can't decide).
Cost: $3.25 Black Bean Salsa, Garlic Salsa, Ghost Pepper Salsa, Barbeque Sauce
Recommendation: These salsas are great for all sorts of uses whether you are trying to spice up a dip or adding some flavor to your everyday grilling adventure. I cannot wait to try more recipes in the future. I would not recommend these salsas if you are a mild and boring person.
