For anyone who hasn't seen my crafty herb garden boxes made from wipe containers, you might not know that I am crazy obsessed with my edible gardening. In Michigan we don't get much of a summer but you better believe I utilize every last bit of sunlight. I actually start my seeds early in the year so they are ready to be transferred outside early spring. Of course we buy very little produce throughout the summer because of this and what we don't eat I either freeze or can. One of the first things you learn as a canner is that you need to follow all instructions to ensure proper safety of your preserved foods. This most importantly includes sealing your jars properly.
The one thing that stinks about canning (especially for all us eco friendly freaks) is that you cannot reuse the lids because they are not guaranteed to properly seal. This kills me to A) have to throw them away regardless of recycling and B) to spend more money as all the canning supplies can become quite expensive. Tattler understands this and has created a reusable canning lid.
"We guarantee the TATTLER plastic lid to last a lifetime or we will replace it free. However, no customer has EVER made the request to replace a single lid." As long as you are using a safe, chip free glass jar and a non damaged rubber gasket ring, the Tattler reusable lids will work in any accepted method of use, pressure cooker, boiler, etc. The Tattler lid was designed in the mid 70's (Made in the U.S.) and has been reused by individuals for reportedly over 30 years.
I am beyond thrilled to have a set of these! No more buying and honestly wasting materials that could be better used for something else. I tried these with my garlic pickles, jalapeno peppers, salsa and spaghetti sauces last night and all had a tight seal when finished. I even feel a little better about using them since the plastic isn't supposed to corrode because of the acid in things like the pickles.
Cost: Starting at $27.95 for the sets
Available to purchase: Tattler
Recommendation: If you can as a hobby or in bulk as a profession, you need to get yourself some of these. They are inexpensive compared to the cost you will spend over time constantly replacing the metal lids. I plan on getting several more since my garden gets bigger with each year!
