Being that Dane is five now and has just finished his first year of real school, I realized we need to be spending more and more time working with him on early educational lessons throughout the Summer to get him prepared for Kindergarten. I've told you all Dane has always been way ahead of all the milestones and that's not me just bragging about my child. As proud as I am I also think that's not always a good thing. You then have children who don't know what to do with themselves because they are too little to get into the things that they are smart enough to.
With Dane and Alana so far apart in age (10 years to be exact), Dane has always been very interested in the same things she is. When Declan came along it became quite difficult to find an activity they can do together without the typical sibling arguing or with one of them losing interest. I was pretty thrilled when I discovered the Summer Brain Games programs provided by the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. This is a free online science program that will keep kids learning all while having a blast doing so.
It is so important for me to keep these children actively learning throughout this time especially so they keep the excitement up for when school time comes back around! With the Summer Brain Games experiments, you are emailed a new and exciting project each week which "will feature an experiment or science challenge that can easily be performed at home with kids of all ages (and with a little adult supervision). " Once I was registered, I had not only a new experiment in my email the following day but access to all the experiments (prior and future).
Right away the boys of course wanted to try every one of them!! However we settled on the current weeks experiment first which was creating Hydroponic Garden. My children are actually no strangers to this time of project as you already know how crazy I am about gardening! They were very quick to tell me which one of my plants would work best for this project (as apparently they are now experts)! We loved this project as it was beyond simple with normal household items as well as recycling a few things that we might have normally thrown away!!
The next project we jumped into a few days later was the one for the following week - Creating a weather station. We actually picked this one because Alana had the opportunity to learn about weather this past year in school so it was something that they all could look at and work on together! Again we were able to throw this one together using items around the house and both Dane and Alana have been using this on a daily basis especially with all the rain we've been having here in Michigan.
Being offered in both English and Spanish, there really isn't much room for excuses not to try out such a wonderful program! When you register you even get a pass to come to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry for free this summer. I am hoping that since we are not too far away that this would make for a great road/weekend trip for the family to go visit a few relatives and take a trip on over there!
Visit msichicago.org/summerbrain now to register for Summer Brain Games and download your free Summer Brain Games kit. As an added bonus, registering automatically gets you a pass to come to the Museum for free this summer.

This was a wonderful post. My grandson & granddaughter are coming to visit us for a week & I have lots of projects & science experiments for them both to participate in. If I had known about summer Brain Games I may have had a little less work. But my philosophy is "better late than never." So, as long as its free, I can add a few more projects in & replace some that might not have been as interesting. Thank you again for telling us all about it. We live 90 minutes outside of Chicago, so we may take a trip to the Museum as a top-off to the week.
ReplyDeleteMy granddaughter & grandson would love the Summer Brain Game Project & visit the Museum in Chicago. I will be visiting the website after this comment & sign up. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a wonderful fun and educational activity for the kids to enjoy. I shall look into it to see if something similar exists near me.
ReplyDeleteThese are some great ideas. It's always good to get new ideas and have fun doing them.
